Cyber Security Seminar by Philokypros Ioulianou (York)
Cyber Security Seminar by Philokypros Ioulianou (York)
13 January 2021 @ 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Title: A Secure Framework for IoT-based devices: SRF-IoT
Abstract: The rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) will offer great benefits for both individuals and companies. However, as smart devices are widely deployed, they become attractive to hackers. Some examples are recent attacks of IoT malware such as Mozi, Mirai and its variants. Therefore, new solutions should be developed to protect the power-constrained devices. In this work, a new Secure Framework for IoT-based devices (SRF-IoT) is proposed. We study the impact of the combination of rank and blackhole attacks in RPL networks. RPL is a routing protocol designed specifically for smart devices. Although many works study the security of RPL, it is still vulnerable to various attacks. SRF-IoT framework contains a trust-based mechanism that detects and isolates malicious attackers with the help of an external Intrusion Detection System (IDS). Evaluation is based on simulations on a new framework called Whitefield framework that combines both Contiki-NG OS and NS-3 simulator. Results show that SRF-IoT improved network performance when the network is under attack.
Bio: Philokypros Ioulianou is a PhD candidate at University of York. His area of research interest is the study of security problems related to the Internet of Things (IoT), network security and Intrusion Detection Systems.

OIG: The Possibilities of Fiction. Claire Smith
OIG: The Possibilities of Fiction. Claire Smith
25 January 2021 @ 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Claire Smith approaches the difficulty of illuminating for non-participants the functioning, contradictions and complexities of the world of secret intelligence through literary fiction. Acknowledging the contribution of women working in intelligence in previous eras, predominantly the Second World War, considering the constraints and conventions which left fiction as the only way of capturing and transmitting that experience, Claire’s talk will cover two case studies: the lives and works of Barbara Pym, many of which were set in Oxford, and Muriel Spark.
